The Sofa inverts stereotypes, by having an elderly woman in charge, objectifying the male body into a muted furniture piece -a sofa, a punishment for his excess sexuality. I see the choice of the sofa as a metaphor for how the female is seen by patriarchy: a soft, pretty body, a passive domestic object.
Through my design, I aim to celebrate the terrifying and powerful figure of the elderly woman, by transforming space into an embodiment of the feminine. How can female authority be obtained through monstrous scenography? How can I claim the auditorium as a female site, a space where the male gaze is subverted? Can the body be experienced from within?
